Hello, Beauties! It’s Monday so we are all about how to use your voice to enhance the quality of today. Today’s blog was inspired by something I saw while watching Hell’s Kitchen this week. It is week 13. The contestants have jumped thru hoops, lived in a state of competition, been mentored by one of the best in the industry, learned from their mistakes or naivety and increased their skill. They are the best of the best. And for most of them, winning is everything. They are very attached to the idea of
Results or Bust!
They are the very definition of growth-minded people – they welcome mistakes and learn from them. But they also put a very high value on perfection. They are only as good as their last dish. It is an interesting juxtaposition to watch.
So this week, in a challenge almost too close to call, Andrew lost. His mentor, Chef Gordon Ramsey had this to say:
“I KNOW that you have a very promising career before you. Well done young man.”
High praise from a very exacting teacher. Had those same words been said to him 13 weeks earlier, my intuition is that Andrew would have been floating on Cloud 9 and heard them as praise instead of a death sentence. Now here are Andrews parting words and they hit me like a ton of bricks.
“I am extremely shocked that I am out of here. I’m pissed at myself. I’m disappointed in myself. I thought I’d at least be in the finale, let alone. . . God forbid…a black jacket. I really let myself down. I feel like I kinda let my son down and everyone back home. So, it’s a rough feeling right now.”
His voice, his words discounted all the growing, all the effort, all the sacrifice he had invested and boiled it down into two messages:
He is stuck in Results based thinking and it will steal his dreams. The way his brain processes information requires him to believe that he is only successful if he gets the outcome he expected, in this case, winning the entire competition. Any growth he attained along the way has no value and is dismissed.
Here is the danger in that kind of Results Based thinking. Your mind takes the action based on what you believe to be true. If he believes himself to be a disappointment and a failure, what action would you expect to come next? For most of you, it shows up as self-sabotage. When things are going well, you subconsciously revert to that belief you have practiced telling your mind is true and you steal success away from yourself.Self-sabotage is human! It is an effective defense mechanism to protect you from pain. Click To Tweet
Results or Bust! It negates all his talent, all his effort, all his potential. What if you could shift towards being more attached to showing up consistently for yourself every day and less attached to the results you generate?
This is one of the skills I teach my one on one clients. I have two new tools I want to share with you to get you off that self sabotage road and moving toward using your voice to inspire you to reach your dreams.
