One reason focusing on the present is so hard is that it requires you to stop looking to the past. Why is that so difficult?
Why do humans continually look to the past? Your marvelous brain loves patterns. And it loves efficiency. When you are past focused, your brain finds the pattern and thinks you want to repeat it. Think about that truth in relation to how you’ve tried to lose weight in the past. Are those patterns you want to walk thru again?
I can almost hear you screaming “NO!”
But your brain is pretty insistent about staying in that comfortable rut. So how can you do something new? Something you’ve never done before? Like go to a holiday party and not overeat? Or focus on today instead of yesterday?
This is one place the past serves you. How did you learn to do the things you already do? At some point in the past, you didn’t know how to drive or be married or a hundred other things. It’s one of the gifts of youth. As a teenager, you took chances and truly believed you could do anything. And you did.
You are literally creating the future you want by living in the present. So, drag out your imagination and describe who you want to be five years from now.
How will that woman treat herself?
Does she overeat at holiday parties?
Is she still fearless creating magic for herself?
