I’m a day late with this post quite on purpose. I sat down to write yesterday and nothing. It wasn’t a bad day, I just had an empty tank. I could have chosen to interpret that set of circumstances as “Something has gone wrong here.” but I’m proud to tell you that I live the tools I offer to you.
One of the major shifts I invite you to take as you begin to work with me is to being a person who is all about the process – what is happening right now – instead of a person who is all about results – in this case, “Did I write the blog?”.
Being about the process, means you show up every day experimenting with the actions you think will get you to your goal. If your goal is weight loss, then you show up day after day feeding yourself well, resting when your body is tired, cleaning your mind of thoughts that don’t serve you, moving your body so that it does not atrophy. You take clear conscious action every day that will eventually lead to the end goal. You are willing to fail, re-calibrate, make a new plan and repeat. You grow every day.
On the other hand, if you have self identified in the past as a perfectionist, people pleaser or approval seeker (like I did) you are probably slanted more toward a results based life.
Process based life:
What can I learn from what’s happening right now that will make my life better?
I can learn to do anything my mind chooses.
Results based life:
I have to perform and hit the “mark”
There are some things I’m really good at and some things I’ll never be good at.
The side effect of choosing to move toward a process based life is self confidence. Because you embrace failure as part of the process, it becomes less scary. You now know for sure something that does NOT work. You get used to hearing your own opinion and acting on it. You don’t need it to be “perfect” (that’s alot of pressure), you just need it to be one iteration better than the last thing you tried.
The bigger result over time is that you are different. For example, I can’t tell you the last time I ate a nacho cheese Dorito. I used to eat them by the Family Size bag full often. Now, they are a non event. My brain no longer thinks they solve a problem.
Since I couldn’t seem to write yesterday, I got out of my house and more importantly out of my head. I went for a long drive in the country headed for the farm. Instant re-connection with my body.
That is also a side effect of living a process based life. Because I’ve practiced multiple times and been willing to be less than perfect experimenting, my body recognizes that trigger of letting go of intellectual thought to come back to center. So I spent a beautiful evening outside with friends connecting with people I love and with nature. Inspiration flooded back into my body.
As I sat and visited with friends, the conversation turned to how much I’ve shifted since we first met. Truth told, I can’t remember not knowing them. I am proud of the nearly two years I have been living a process based life. I am happier. I have put closer to alot of old hurt. My self confidence has bloomed. I trust myself. My inner mean girl is settling nicely into retirement.
