Hello, Beauties! Ken and I got new cards yesterday. No, not credit cards or greeting cards or playing cards. We got new library cards! AND I got a bonus reward for getting out of the house for this excursion; the new John Grisham book “Camino Island”. More about that in a minute, but first:
What kind of book person are you?
Books occupy a considerable amount of space in our house. You will find them in every room. They run the gamut from comic books to cookbooks to Stephen King books to biographies to history books. Books on religion, books on music, books that have been made into movies and books you’ve never heard of before reading spines in our back bedroom.
There is no right way or wrong way to love books.
For Ken, books are living breathing things not just inanimate objects on a shelf. He’s known to read the same book multiple times. I learned early on not to try to straighten the piles he creates. They are his friends and he knows right where he left them when he is ready to pick them back up again. He gains pleasure from simply walking into the room and seeing them.
For me, books are a one time experience. It’s one of the reasons I’ve always used the library. Even with this new book that I can’t seem to put down, I know that after I finish reading it I will likely never touch it again. The majority of books that I have purchased got donated to the library after I finished them so that they have an opportunity to be read by other eyes.
A surge of joy engulfed me just walking into the library
I instantly remember how much I love walking into a library and letting my eyes read titles waiting for the one that beckons me to pull it out and read the jacket cover. Then finding a nook to sit in and read the first ten pages.
When my kids were smaller we often spent afternoons in the library. In the middle of crazy summertime chaos or vacation time boredom, the library provided a quiet sanctuary to let my mind escape to another world.
Back then I couldn’t afford to buy books. I got newly released books the same way I got this one yesterday. I can’t wait to read it and then release it back to the library for the next person to experience this same flavor of joy.
Is this a joy source you need to add to your rotation?
Before meeting Ken, I’d never known anyone who felt the kind of ongoing connection to books. It is a beautiful thing to watch. At the same time, I know it is not the way I experience books.
The Good News is YOU get to personalize YOUR sources of joy. AND still share them with folks you love. I loved watching Ken stroll thru the aisles yesterday finding new books to dive into. He found several he’s never read by an author he already loves.
So here’s my challenge to you:
The library is less than a half mile from our house and getting library cards has been on our “to do” list for over two years. It’s almost comical how easy it was to give ourselves this hour of immersion in pure joy. The silly grin on your face and in your heart when you claim joy trumps any excuses your mind might offer.
