Hello, Beauties! Danger of practicing badly: “I keep messing up at the same place”. During my piano lesson this week, I got a valuable tool to share here about losing weight. Despite having practiced all week to be ready to “show off” to my teacher, I still stumbled at the same point I’d been struggling with all week.
Danger of practicing badly: “I keep messing up at the same place”
Totally embarrassed, I apologized and explained vehemently that I HAD been practicing! Why couldn’t I just get it already? Sound familiar?
It did to me. I’ve said that same thing before about weight loss. Why can’t I just do it already? I’m trying! Sincerely! Hard! If you’re like me, you frustrate yourself over and over by “failing” at the same place.
So, here’s the lesson she shared with me that applies both to the piano and weight loss. Every time I hit the wrong key, I went back to the beginning and started over only to trip in the same place again. As a result, I got really, really good at playing the first part and . . .
REINFORCED stumbling every time in the same place.
The solution offered by Jen (my beautiful piano teacher)? Play just the bar I was having trouble playing.
Play JUST those four notes over and over.
I’ll admit, I kinda balked thinking”That’s too simple and it won’t work”.
But, I’m the student in this situation so I did.
For the last week, I’ve practiced just those four notes over and over.
And TA-DA, when I went to play the entire song, I no longer stumbled.
My fingers had memorized the sequence. My eyes learned to look ahead and anticipate.
The danger in practicing it WRONG was that every iteration reinforced the WRONG pattern in my brain.
Now, let’s use that same logic for weight loss.
You know you’ve experienced this. Most of you do the first three days of any diet well. BECAUSE you’ve done the first three days over and over and over.
Then comes day four:
cheat day, dinner with friends, worked overtime, didn’t get to the market, stressed out, etc
That day when:
the excitement and commitment from day one have worn off and your thoughts are telling you all the reasons this will never work.
So, this is how you can use this tool in the next few days – even if you are not actively trying to lose weight.
- Identify where you usually unplug from yourself. Is it when eating out? When you have company? During stressful periods at work or home?
- Write 3 thoughts you know show up as you make the decision to disconnect.
- Decide how you want to act the next time you are in that situation.
- Practice when the opportunity arises.
- Debrief to see what worked or didn’t work. If you are still disconnected, it probably needs to be broken into even smaller pieces.
It takes some practice and willingness to practice the middle instead of the beginning but the payoff is those extra pounds exiting your body.
You thought your job was losing weight.
Actually, your job is continually practicing new habits that move you closer
to taking amazing care of your beautiful body – the one you see in the mirror today.
If you’re thinking, that sounds great but I don’t think I could really execute it in real time, give me a call. I’ll walk you thru this process for your specific situation. It will also give you an opportunity to experience the power of coaching. Schedule your free 30 min appointment NOW!
